2018 Musink

2018 Musink

I had the great pleasure of covering the 2017 Musink Tatfest, in Costa Mesa, California, for Alternative Press Magazine and was invited back to shoot for the 2018 festival. Here are a few videos I created for AP in 2017..

While these videos may capture the essence of Musink, there is a lot that wasn't included in the videos. For example, I got to meet Daniel Rojas, an incredibly talented photographer who spends a majority of his time not only photographing Travis' performances, but he also takes on the delicate task of creating some of your favorite Famous Stars and Straps designs. Rojas was my point of contact at the festival and he invited me out to the OC Fairgrounds a night before the festival to get the lay of the land.

Not only did he introduce me to some of the biggest names in the game, like Bobby Tribal, who coordinates the Low n' Slow car show, and Cory Danger, one of the top barbers around, who finalised the list of tattoo artists, but Daniel also helped me land an interview with Travis, AND I had the opportunity to not only watch Travis perform for the first time, while photographing him performing. It was definitely an awesome moment that sparked an entire new leg of my journey as a filmmaker and photographer. Oh, not to mention that Travis was playing with Goldfinger, who I had never seen, and later got to interview the legendary John Feldman. If you're not sure who John is...well... This is some of his work:

From that moment everything in my world changed. I was asked if I could film a quick video for Feldmann, as he was working with an Australian band and wanted to create an EPK video series for them. While at the studio I ran into Jason Butler (Letlive, THE FEVER 333) who was rehearsing with his new band, THE FEVER 333, and we proceeded to film a studio music video for them. They had only played in the same room together a handful of times and when I said, "I think we're good," I knew that this band was about to spread its name across the world.

Fast forward one year, three shows, and, shortly after Musink, announced their signing with Roadrunner Records, I stood in the photo pit, poised and read for Jason to throw something, his body included, and with my "3" held high in the air.

The Fever 333

Bringing the streets back to punk rock..and bringing punk rock back to the streets

California caught a fever and I got the chance to be one of the first patients to catch it. If you think you might have the infection, check your temperature; if it reads "333," pick up your sticks and stones, because we're throwing them back.

Good Charlotte

I wonder how it feels to be the punks that became those celebs that live the Lifestyle of the Rich and the Famous...fellas? Good Charlotte holds a special place in all of our emo hearts, and I will never forget the first time I saw liberty spikes (thanks Benji). Photography has allowed me to experience some incredible moments, but I must say, getting to see some of my all time favorite bands for the first time, from the photo pit, where I can capture the show exactly how I felt it, is absolutely incredible.

Blink-182

Now on to Blink..I have now seen Blink play twice, once in Australia, without Travis, and here, at Musink, in the state where Travis grew up, at a festival that he has become a huge part of. Since 2017 Musink, I've had the chance to shoot some absolutely incredible bands, like Blink. There's not much I need to say about them, because you probably know everything there is to know about the band, but outside of the music, the lights, and the fans, these guys are extremely humble and calm off stage. It's always very interesting to see how "famous" people are behind the scenes. I had the opportunity to interview Travis Barker last year, and that led to shooting Goldfinger, which led to shooting for Feldmann, which led to shooting for The Fever 333, which brought me to the photo pit for Blink-182and I cannot wait to see what the next steps are.

Machinegunkelly

And Kels, MGK, this guy. Let me tell you, at first I wasn't sure about the guy, but despite his rebellious persona, which is comparable to that of the Thommy-gun weilding gangster, is exceptionally kind. This was my first time seeing MGK live and I definitely had a blast shooting them and hope to do so again soon!
